General Manager Comments on Avdija's Future
General Manager Joe Cronin addressed the issue on Monday, explaining that Avdija will become eligible for a contract extension starting Friday. At a press conference, Cronin stated: "Avdija's contract is structured in a complicated way. This is not just a standard extension... We will need to renegotiate in order to extend him."
Cronin also spoke about the addition of Ja Morant to the roster, emphasizing the team's confidence in his abilities and elite talent despite external questions regarding team fit.
Team Outlook and Roster Integration
Head coach Micah Nori discussed blending the talent on the floor, noting the defensive luxuries provided by players like Donovan Clingan, Robert Williams, Toumani Camara, and Jrue Holiday, alongside Avdija's crucial two-way presence. Regarding Avdija's specific role, Nori added: "We would have to be crazy not to continue with this."
"If I have the ball and push it so Ja can run, I feel good about it. If it is the same for Deni to create penetration and open up space, I feel good too… We are on the same page," Damian Lillard said.
Lillard expressed his excitement about returning after a rigorous 16-month recovery period. With a deep rotation featuring Morant, Holiday, and Scoot Henderson, Lillard noted that he no longer needs to shoulder the entire burden of the regular season alone as Portland aims to push deeper into the playoffs.
