Losing a wallet or discovering that an important document is expired is a frustrating experience. Beyond credit cards, losing an identity card often triggers a lengthy search for an available appointment at the Population and Immigration Authority and a waiting period for a new document.

Requirements and Procedures

Under routine circumstances, issuing or renewing an identity card requires booking an appointment in advance at a bureau of the Population and Immigration Authority. Waiting times vary significantly depending on the location and current workload. While online renewal is available for eligible individuals, others must visit in person.

Applicants must bring their existing ID card for renewal. In cases of loss or theft, bringing an Israeli passport or another official photo ID such as a military or police card is recommended. Notably, a standard driver's license is not accepted as a primary identification document for biometric documentation processes.

In the event of a lost, stolen, or damaged ID card, a fee of 145 NIS is currently charged, and applicants must sign a formal declaration. Biometric photographs are taken on-site at the bureau.

Preparing for the Elections

This administrative push arrives less than three weeks before the 26th Knesset elections scheduled for October 27, as part of a joint effort by the Population and Immigration Authority and the Central Elections Committee to ensure all eligible citizens can vote.

Authorities emphasize that an identity card is not the only acceptable form of identification at polling stations. The law also permits identification via a valid Israeli passport or a valid driver's license containing a photograph.
