Poland Scrambles Jets and Raises Air Defense Alert After Ukraine Drone Attacks
Poland scrambled military aircraft and placed air defense systems on high alert following Russian drone strikes in western Ukraine, heightening NATO vigilance.

Poland has raised the combat readiness of its military aviation and air defense systems following a large-scale Russian drone attack on targets in western Ukraine. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces announced that fighter jets were scrambled to secure the national airspace after strikes hit areas near the border.
Preventive Measures by Warsaw
According to the official statement released by the military command, ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance units have been placed on high alert. The deployment serves as a strictly defensive measure to protect Polish territory amid escalating military activities near the eastern flank of NATO.
"Due to ongoing strikes by the Russian Federation against targets in western Ukraine using unmanned aerial vehicles, military aircraft are operating in Polish airspace," the Operational Command stated. "These actions are preventive in nature and aimed at securing and protecting the Polish airspace, especially in areas adjacent to threatened regions."
Regional Escalation and Infrastructure Damage
The heightened state of alert follows widespread Russian strikes targeting energy and critical infrastructure across Ukraine. Recent attacks in the Volyn region, which borders Poland, left hundreds of thousands of residents without electricity. Airports in Lublin and Rzeszow temporarily restricted operations to accommodate military flights, though no direct airspace violations by drones were officially confirmed during the latest incident.
NATO's Eastern Flank on High Alert
Warsaw remains deeply concerned about the spillover of the conflict into NATO territory. Poland, a steadfast supporter of Kyiv, has previously dealt with stray aerial threats near its border. Meanwhile, tensions in the Baltic region have also escalated, marked by recent Russian strategic bomber flights over international waters, underscoring the persistent risk of unintended military escalations.
