Turkish Court Sentences Killer of Young Footballer to Life Imprisonment
An Istanbul court sentenced Alaattin Kadaifçioğlu to life in prison for murdering 20-year-old footballer Kubilay Kaan Kundakçı during a botched reconciliation attempt.
A Turkish court in Istanbul has sentenced Alaattin Kadaifçioğlu to life imprisonment for the murder of 20-year-old professional footballer Kubilay Kaan Kundakçı. The fatal shooting occurred on March 19 in Istanbul's Ümraniye district, stemming from an attempted reconciliation between a rapper and his ex-girlfriend, singer Aleyna Kalaycıoğlu.
The Fatal Incident
According to the indictment and security footage, rapper Vahap Canbay, a member of the group Canbay & Wolker, asked Kundakçı to help him reconcile with Kalaycıoğlu, whom he had split from weeks earlier. The footballer and his friends accompanied Canbay to a recording studio area where the singer was staying.
While waiting in a parked car, two vehicles approached. Kadaifçioğlu emerged from one of them, drew a firearm, opened the passenger door, and shot Kundakçı. The young forward was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Investigators noted that the attack was premeditated, backed by communications data and vehicle sightings prior to the shooting.
Legal Verdicts and Acquittals
Singer Aleyna Kalaycıoğlu, who faced severe scrutiny and initial accusations of incitement, was fully acquitted by the court and released from custody after months of detention. Four other defendants were also cleared, while four more received prison sentences for lesser offenses such as concealing evidence and assisting a criminal.
"The court has delivered its verdict on the tragic events of March 19, bringing closure to a case that deeply shocked the Turkish public and the sporting community."
Kundakçı, born on October 6, 2005, had played for several clubs including Ümraniyespor, Fatih Karagümrük, and Kars 36 Spor. His teammates previously honored his memory with special jerseys and a minute of silence following his death.
