We are used to receiving a round pizza inside a square cardboard box, but this mismatch is far from accidental. The reason is not aesthetic, but rather economic and logistical: square boxes are simply cheaper and easier to manufacture, store, and transport.

According to Rocket Industrial, a square pizza box can be manufactured from a single flat piece of cardboard, which is easily cut and folded. The straight lines also allow for better utilization of cardboard sheets during production, reducing material waste. In contrast, a round box requires curved cuts and a more complex structure, increasing production costs and waste.

Practical Storage and Efficient Transport

Square boxes have another advantage before the pizza even goes inside: they can be stored completely flat. This allows large quantities to be stacked in a relatively small space and quickly assembled when needed.

During delivery, the square structure is also more efficient. Boxes can be packed tightly together without significant gaps, unlike round boxes which leave empty spaces. Furthermore, the folding tabs allow for quick opening and closing.

The corners allow fingers to easily reach in to grab a slice, and they can also be used for seasoning packets, sauces, and extra toppings.

The space around the pizza also prevents the crust from constantly rubbing against the cardboard walls, offering extra protection during delivery.

Why the Square Box Wins

Seemingly, a round box would be the obvious choice to match the product. In practice, however, it is more expensive, cumbersome to produce, and harder to transport in large quantities.

This is why, despite years of packaging experiments, the square box still rules the market: it is cheaper, simpler to produce, and more efficient in storage and transport.
