It was only a matter of time before advertising found its way into artificial intelligence tools. Following what appears to be a successful trial, OpenAI is beginning to warn users that this moment is fast approaching, meaning Israeli users will soon encounter ads within ChatGPT.

Ads Will Not Affect Answers, But Your Queries Shape the Content

Until now, free AI tools have primarily tried to push users toward paid subscriptions through various limitations, such as restricting access to less sophisticated models or implementing usage caps. However, much like other digital sectors, AI companies are seeking ways to monetize free users without requiring them to open their wallets. The primary method, naturally, is exposure to advertisements.

Much like Google and Meta integrate ads across their free products, OpenAI began introducing advertising to ChatGPT earlier this year. Initially launched as a limited test in the United States, OpenAI is now dispatching emails to its global user base regarding an update to its privacy policy. The company explains that advertisements will appear for users on the Free tier and the Go plan, while assuring that ads will not influence the answers provided by ChatGPT.

The company emphasizes that advertisements will appear in a separate section distinct from the organic responses generated by ChatGPT. Furthermore, private data and chat histories will not be shared with any advertisers. "Advertisers only receive general performance metrics regarding their ads, such as total views or clicks," the company notes.

The Email Reaching Israeli Users

As part of the privacy policy update, OpenAI noted that the information users input into ChatGPT will be utilized to personalize ad delivery. For instance, users frequently searching for food-related topics may soon encounter advertisements for delivery services or supermarkets. Additionally, OpenAI may integrate data provided by advertisers and data partners to determine whether a purchase was made, thereby displaying more relevant promotions.

Recent checks indicate that Israeli users have begun receiving this notification email from OpenAI alongside users worldwide. This rollout suggests that OpenAI is preparing for a global launch of its advertising system, making it only a matter of time before Israeli users encounter sponsored content within their chats. As clarified by OpenAI, paying subscribers will remain entirely exempt from advertisements.
