Fake October 7 Hostage Video Resurfaces on Social Media
Ahead of the October 7 anniversary, social media archives of the war have resurfaced, alongside the viral spread and subsequent debunking of a fake hostage video.
As Israel approaches the third anniversary of the October 7 massacres, social media is seeing a surge in archival footage and harrowing reminders of the tragedy. Among the circulating content, an old fake video has resurfaced, falsely claiming to show a captive Israeli child in Gaza.
Resurgence of October 7 Archives
Accounts on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok have increasingly published broadcasts and clips from the outbreak of the Swords of Iron war. Footage from locations like the Soroka Medical Center and Sderot has garnered millions of views. However, this wave of digital memory has also facilitated the spread of misinformation.
The child in this video is not an Israeli who was kidnapped on October 7. He is an Arab child playing hostages with his friends and calling out Ima - Mom in Hebrew, while his friends tease him over his mother's identity.
Debunking Misinformation
A video originally circulated on October 8, 2023, depicting children playing a mock hostage scenario, was recently reshared by prominent accounts, including one previously linked to Yair Netanyahu before being deleted. Activists such as Eyal Yakoby and Noa Magid quickly stepped in to clarify that the video features local Arab children rather than Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
