NATO Fighter Jet Intercepts and Shoots Down Drone in Lithuanian Airspace
A NATO fighter jet shot down a drone over southern Lithuania after it crossed from Belarus. The incident highlights growing security concerns over stray aircraft amid the ongoing war.
A NATO fighter jet intercepted and shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Lithuanian airspace early Tuesday amid escalating tensions tied to the Russia-Ukraine war. The National Crisis Management Center in Lithuania confirmed the unusual incident, stating that the drone was downed near the village of Pratkunai in southern Lithuania, close to Kaunas, shortly after midnight. Officials noted that the UAV likely crossed the border from Belarus, though its exact origin remains unverified.
Air raid alerts were triggered in Vilnius and surrounding regions prior to the interception. NATO has maintained its Baltic Air Policing mission over Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia since 2004, and allied jets have increasingly faced similar threats in recent months. Previous interceptions occurred in Estonia in May, as well as Latvia in June and August.
The frequent incursions into allied airspace have heightened concerns in the West regarding the spillover of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian long-range drone strikes targeting Russian territory have intensified recently, occasionally resulting in stray craft drifting off course into Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Meanwhile, Kyiv has blamed Moscow for the navigation errors, alleging that Russian electronic warfare systems are actively disrupting drone flight paths.
