Authorities in the US state of Florida have successfully completed Operation Statewide Shield, an unprecedented and extensive enforcement operation during which 163 missing children and minors were rescued. The five-day operation, which ran from August 17 to 21, was led directly by Florida authorities for the first time rather than under federal command, and is being hailed as the largest rescue operation in the state's history.
The rescued minors, ranging from just two months old to 17 years old, fell victim to a series of serious offenses, including sexual abuse, neglect, exploitation, and human trafficking. Authorities clarified that the cases are diverse and not linked to a single criminal network. The operation led to the location of children in major Florida cities including Tampa, Miami, and Jacksonville, as well as in six other US states, Puerto Rico, and 12 foreign countries such as Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. The rescued children were transferred to specialized care centers for medical and psychological assistance.
As part of the operation, criminal proceedings were initiated and several suspects were arrested, including Michael Prescott, Robert Allison, and Jaden Harwood, who are accused of sex offenses against helpless individuals, assault, and custody violations. Meanwhile, footage from the operation went viral on social media and sparked a media storm: many users attacked X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk for his silence on the issue, contrasting with his usual outspoken criticism of child sexual exploitation in other cases.
