The Democratic wave in the US midterm elections has produced dramatic surprises, with Democratic shifts in Senate races across conservative strongholds like Texas, Kansas, and South Carolina. However, an even greater upset may be unfolding in Mississippi, where the race between Republican incumbent Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and her Democratic challenger, Scott Colom, remains undecided.

Two days after the polls closed, vote counting continues, with 96% of ballots tallied. Colom currently holds a narrow lead of 1,724 votes, expanding from just 43 votes earlier in the week. If the 46-year-old prosecutor maintains his lead and unseats Hyde-Smith, who has served since 2018, he will become the first Democrat sent to the US Senate from Mississippi since 1982. He would also make history as the first African American senator from the state since Blanche Bruce in 1874, during the Reconstruction era.

Political analysts note that Colom secured an upset victory in Forrest County, named after Nathan Bedford Forrest, the founder of the Ku Klux Klan. Colom's campaign points out that remaining uncounted votes are concentrated in areas favorable to Democrats, prompting optimism within his camp. Meanwhile, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has dispatched legal teams to Mississippi to assist the campaign, anticipating potential legal challenges from the incumbent.

Colom's campaign focused heavily on the cost of living, healthcare, and high fuel prices resulting from the conflict with Iran. The challenger gained viral attention with an advertisement mocking Hyde-Smith's remarks advising consumers facing high meat prices to choose alternative protein sources. If victorious, Colom aims to break new ground while addressing economic pressures and public services.
