As countless artists around the globe use their massive platforms to mix politics into their work—especially regarding Israel and the war that began following the October 7 attacks—Metallica frontman James Hetfield has spoken out firmly against the trend.

During a performance as part of the "Life Burns Faster" residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Hetfield addressed the crowd: "If you don't live in Vegas, you probably traveled a long way to spend some time with Metallica. I just want to say: Metallica isn't here, like some other artists, to influence you with their bullshit." He added: "We are here to forget about all the crap outside. Metallica's agenda is love, energy, and heavy music, baby!".

Backlash Against Politicized Music

Hetfield's remarks come against the backdrop of sharp criticism from various international artists since the outbreak of the war. Among the vocal critics are rapper Macklemore, who participated in pro-Palestinian protests and released the protest song "Hind's Hall"; singer Ed Sheeran, who signed open letters calling for a ceasefire; and Kanye West (Ye), who sparked global controversies with anti-Semitic remarks and conspiracy theories.

Artists Standing with Israel

On the other hand, prominent international artists have chosen to take a staunch pro-Israel stance. British singer Boy George released the song "We Will Dance Again" in memory of the victims of the Nova festival and announced two sold-out shows at Menora Mivtachim Arena in Tel Aviv in November 2026. Additionally, Russian-Jewish artist Morgenshtern recently surprised fans during a show in Spain by stepping on stage wrapped in an Israeli flag, declaring: "In the darkest place, there is light."
