McDonald's and Meituan Launch First Exclusive Drone Delivery in Shanghai
McDonald's and Meituan launched China's first exclusive fast-food drone delivery route in Shanghai, capable of transporting orders in just 10 minutes.
McDonald's and Chinese food delivery giant Meituan have launched the country's first exclusive drone delivery route dedicated solely to the fast-food brand, as reported this week by the South China Morning Post.
Drone Delivery Route in Shanghai
The new service allows visitors and joggers along the scenic West Bund area in Shanghai's Xuhui district to receive their fast-food orders "air-dropped" directly to designated kiosks. According to an official announcement by district authorities, the 3.1-kilometer flight path originates from a McDonald's branch in Xuhui and is designed to serve thousands of office workers in the area as well as tourists visiting the riverbanks.
"The custom-designed drones are capable of carrying a maximum capacity of 2.4 kilograms and completing the delivery to the waterfront in just about 10 minutes."
Technical Specifications and Weather Resilience
Meituan noted that the initiative reflects China's willingness to increase investment in the "low-altitude economy" as a new driver for technological innovation. Meituan has been expanding its drone business in recent years to maintain an edge over competitors like Alibaba and JD.com. The company stated that the volume of commercial drone delivery orders has already crossed the 900,000 threshold.
mai Qiong, head of national commercial drone management at Meituan, noted that the aircraft maintain a safety factor of 99.999%, which he attributed to nine years of research and testing. The drones can operate in moderate rain and snow, and in winds up to force 6 on the Beaufort scale (up to 49 km/h).
