Lonnie Walker has left Maccabi Tel Aviv after a somewhat disappointing season, yet managed to return to the NBA with a contract at the Denver Nuggets. The 27-year-old guard, who signed a one-year deal worth $3.3 million, attended the team's media day and spoke extensively about his time in Europe, his return to the best league in the world, and what he learned about himself along the way.
Reflections on Europe and the NBA
"Just having the opportunity to play overseas is a blessing, and as long as you keep playing basketball, it's a blessing," Walker said. "What I learned is that I have a lot to offer. I am not going to keep hiding it or being modest about it. I know what I'm capable of and I'm very confident in that. There is a lot of fire in me, and I am just entering my prime years. This is my ninth year as a professional, but I'm only 27."
Walker added: "I've been through almost everything you can go through as a professional — not playing, playing at your highest level, being injured, moving from team to team. But I am still here. A lot of people have already written me off, but there are still many chapters left to write in my book. I am a fighter, I work very hard, and I will keep fighting until I have nothing left to give."
"In Europe, if you lose a game or two, you might find yourself fired. The level of expectations there is completely different. Almost every game feels like a playoff game," Walker explained regarding the differences in European basketball.
Growth and New Beginnings in Denver
Walker shared that his time in Europe also impacted him off the court: "The time in Europe gave me a lot of time with myself. It was perhaps the first time I could really look at myself in the mirror, understand what I need to take responsibility for, what I need to improve in, and where I need to mature. I learned a lot, I matured a lot, and I think I am ready."
Walker, who played last season for Maccabi Tel Aviv and averaged 15.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in the EuroLeague, returns to the NBA after previously playing for San Antonio, the Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia. Now he will try to integrate into Denver's rotation and re-establish his place in the league.
