Iran Attempting to Increase Weapons Smuggling to Hezbollah
Concerns are rising as weapons are transferred to the terrorist organization in Lebanon via the Syrian border, often slipping under the radar. A defense source stated that Hezbollah is exploiting the ceasefire to build up its strength. Israel views this as a primary reason to maintain freedom of action in Syria.
The defense establishment has recently identified an increase in attempts to smuggle weapons through the Syrian border into Lebanese territory. According to a security source, Iran is behind these smuggling operations. Security agencies hold the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards responsible for the funding and operational management on the ground, ensuring that weapons reach Hezbollah. The smuggling is part of the terrorist organization's current efforts to rehabilitate and rearm within Lebanon.
A source in the defense establishment stated:
"Hezbollah is exploiting the ceasefire to build up its strength, and therefore has shifted into high gear in its smuggling attempts through Syria. We estimate that many smuggling operations succeed and remain undetected."
Despite documentation showing seizures of weapons by the Syrian and Lebanese armies in recent months, many shipments manage to enter Syrian territory and slip under the radar. Israel views this as a central reason for maintaining freedom of action in Syria, as identifying significant smuggling operations provides the legitimacy to strike within the country to thwart the threat.
This is not the first time Iran has attempted to smuggle weapons to terrorist elements. In October 2025, the IDF and the Shin Bet thwarted the smuggling of advanced weapons from Iran intended for terrorists in Judea and Samaria. The seized shipment included anti-tank rockets, Claymore mines, drones capable of dropping explosives, hand grenades, and machine guns.
