Yigal Amir Petitions Court for Furlough to Visit Ailing Father
Yigal Amir, convicted of assassinating Yitzhak Rabin, petitioned the court against National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir for a 48-hour furlough to visit his critically ill father.
Yigal Amir, the assassin of late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, has petitioned the court against National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and the Israel Prison Service. He demands a 48-hour special furlough to visit his critically ill 85-year-old father.
Petition Details
Amir, serving a life sentence since November 4, 1995, is currently held in a secure wing at Sharon Prison. According to the petition filed to court, his father, Shlomo Amir, has been diagnosed with a severe medical condition.
On September 8, Amir requested permission to visit a private home in Herzliya to stay alongside his ailing father. The Israel Prison Service rejected the request on September 28, citing security risks, intelligence assessments, and opposition from security bodies.
Legal Arguments
Amir argues that the decision must rely on an individual assessment rather than solely reflecting the severity of his original crime. He emphasizes the extreme humanitarian circumstances and offered to accept strict supervision conditions, including armed guards and financial guarantees.
The time factor is critical in this matter, and there is a genuine concern that the window of opportunity for a final meeting is closing rapidly.
Amir's legal team has urged the court to order Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to issue an official response and schedule an urgent hearing on the matter.
