Matchbox Twenty frontman accidentally injures bandmate with microphone stand

Rob Thomas, lead singer of the band Matchbox Twenty, has gone viral following an unfortunate incident during a performance in Springfield. While spinning his microphone stand, Thomas accidentally struck his bandmate, guitarist Paul Doucette, causing a severe ear injury and shattering his in-ear monitors.

The incident occurred on Sunday, August 16. Thomas was spinning the stand over his head and failed to notice Doucette standing directly behind him. Footage shows the moment of impact, after which a stunned Doucette loses his balance and is forced to leave the stage.

"Every night I throw this thing in the air," Thomas told the audience after realizing the severity of the situation. "It hit him hard. My best friend in the world, and I feel terrible about it. It felt like a good idea until now; I feel like an idiot."

Upon returning to the stage after receiving medical attention, Doucette did not mince words regarding the bandmate's signature stage move:

"I don't know how many times I've told you about spinning that thing. I knew it was only a matter of time."

Later, Doucette shared a video on his Instagram showing technicians using tweezers to remove fragments from his ear. "Rob totally took me down, and I have pieces of my in-ear monitors—which he crushed—inside my ear," he told his followers. "This is not fun."

Matchbox Twenty achieved significant success with a string of hits in the US during the late nineties and early two thousands. Lead singer Rob Thomas is also widely recognized for his collaboration with guitarist Santana on the hit song "Smooth," which broke numerous chart records and sold millions of copies worldwide.
