La Liga returns: Dramatic victory for Sevilla over Rayo and Alaves win

The 26/27 season in the Spanish La Liga kicked off this Saturday with two matches. In the early game, Alaves scored three late goals on the way to a 3:0 win over Getafe. Afterwards, there was great drama as a late penalty gave Sevilla a 2:1 win over Rayo Vallecano.

Sevilla hoped to start the league on the right foot after finishing just one point above the relegation zone last season, but found themselves trailing at home as early as the 4th minute. Senegalese defender Arouna Sangante made a serious mistake, and Alvaro Garcia took advantage to put the visitors in the lead. Sevilla equalized thanks to a penalty by Jon Guridi (52'), and in the 88th minute found themselves at a numerical disadvantage following the sending off of Kike Salas. Despite this, they managed to collect all three points thanks to a penalty at the buzzer (97') by substitute Peque.

In the opening game of the season, Alaves won thanks to a late show by Mariano Diaz. Getafe remained with 10 players following a direct red card for Kiko Femenia, but the Basques could not capitalize until the 73rd minute, when the former Real Madrid and Sevilla player stepped up.

"First, Diaz crossed to the head of Nahuel Tenaglia, who headed it in. In stoppage time, he scored with a tremendous shot into the top corner from outside the box and finished with another assist, this time to Mikel Rodriguez, who finished nicely from inside the box."

Getafe, who surprised last season by finishing in seventh place, had a dismal start, recording a 3:0 loss in the opening game.
