Erik Ten Hag Breaks Silence on Manchester United Exit and Ronaldo
Erik ten Hag breaks his silence two years after leaving Manchester United, discussing his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, broken promises by club management, and missed transfer targets.

Two years after his departure from Manchester United, Erik ten Hag has broken his silence. In a comprehensive interview with The Athletic, the Dutch manager, currently serving as technical director of Twente, discussed the circumstances of his October 2024 exit, his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, and the promises made by the club's leadership.
The Relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo
Reflecting on his time with the Portuguese star, ten Hag did not mince words regarding Ronaldo's commitment and physical readiness during the 2022-2023 season. "He let the team down, and he let me down, because we were counting on him," ten Hag stated. The manager detailed issues concerning training intensity and tactical execution following a difficult start to his tenure.
Broken Promises and Transfers
Ten Hag also criticized the Old Trafford hierarchy for failing to uphold agreements made after winning the FA Cup in 2024. He specifically pointed to the sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli against his explicit wishes, alongside missed opportunities to sign elite targets such as Harry Kane, Declan Rice, and Frenkie de Jong during his time at the helm.
