South Korean Exam Cheating Uncovered with AI Smart Glasses
Candidates in South Korea were caught using AI smart glasses connected to ChatGPT and Gemini during university entrance and English proficiency exams, prompting stricter enforcement.
A candidate taking an entrance exam at a leading private university in Seoul was caught using AI glasses capable of scanning exam questions and displaying solutions on the lenses. According to Yonsei University, the student likely swapped his regular glasses for the smart device after receiving the exam paper. He was caught during a mathematics entrance exam, his glasses were confiscated, and he later confessed to using them.
According to the Korea JoongAng Daily, another incident occurred a week earlier at the University of Seoul. A proctor noticed a relatively thick frame, and an inspection revealed they were smart glasses. The applicant was expelled from the hall and banned from taking the university's entrance exams for three years, while Yonsei launched an investigation.
The glasses used in the cheating cases are equipped with a tiny camera that scans questions. By connecting to services like ChatGPT and Gemini, they can project answers and step-by-step solutions onto transparent lenses.
The phenomenon is not limited to universities: three candidates were caught using smart glasses during TOEIC English exams in May and June. In July, criminal proceedings were also initiated against a person suspected of using them in a professional certification exam.
