A bizarre incident involving a 62-year-old football fan is currently on trial in England. John Ryan, a supporter of Maidstone United, is accused of intentionally jumping from the upper tier at Portman Road stadium during an FA Cup match against Ipswich Town in January 2024, landing on fans sitting below.
During the court hearing in Ipswich, prosecutor Simon Gladwell presented CCTV footage and social media videos showing the defendant rolling onto the roof of the lower tier before falling onto the crowd. The prosecution argues that the action was deliberate or at least reckless, resulting in injuries to two supporters, Joan Peters and Aaron Ross.
Ryan denies the charges, claiming the wall was too low to stop his fall and suggesting he might have been pushed. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault and one count of assault causing actual bodily harm. The trial is ongoing.
