Israel Railways Announces Free Travel and Service Boost for Election Day
Israel Railways announced free train travel for election day on October 27, 2026, alongside reinforced service between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to accommodate millions of voters.

Israel is preparing for election day for the 26th Knesset, scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Alongside political and security preparations, public transportation agencies are finalizing preparations for one of the busiest peak days of the year. Israel Railways has announced special preparations for anticipated high travel demand, including free travel services for the general public and a significant reinforcement of train traffic between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Free Travel Arrangements
In accordance with the Central Elections Committee decision, train services will be free of charge starting Monday, October 26, 2026, at 8:00 PM, through the end of public transportation operations on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. The initiative aims to enable citizens to exercise their democratic right and reach polling stations comfortably and without cost barriers.
However, Israel Railways emphasizes a critical instruction to prevent unnecessary charges: the free travel benefit will be provided exclusively via paper tickets, which must be issued at automatic machines located at the stations. Passengers are requested not to validate Rav-Kav smart cards or use mobile payment applications, as doing so will trigger regular financial charges.
Service Reinforcement and Safety Guidelines
As part of the service reinforcement, the Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon - Tel Aviv line will operate three trains per hour in each direction, instead of the usual two, between 12:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The third train each hour will begin and end its journey at the Tel Aviv HaHagana station. Alongside the reinforcement, Israel Railways reminds the public that, per Israel Police guidelines, there is a passenger limit on the line to and from the capital. Therefore, every passenger on this line is required to obtain a designated travel voucher in advance for their preferred train.
"Israel Railways is fully committed to ensuring smooth mobility for millions of citizens on election day, while maintaining strict safety and operational standards across all lines."
Electoral Context and High Demand
The extensive preparations by Israel Railways take place against the backdrop of record numbers for the 26th Knesset elections: the voter registry includes over 7.33 million eligible voters, representing an increase of more than half a million voters compared to the previous elections. More than 12,000 regular polling stations will open nationwide, alongside hundreds of special stations in hospitals, rehabilitation institutions, and detention facilities.
Election day is designated as an official day off in the economy. Consequently, hundreds of thousands of Israelis are expected to use the day off not only for voting but also for shopping trips, nature hikes, and family leisure, which is expected to generate heavy road congestion and increase pressure on railway lines. Israel Railways recommends that passengers arrive early at stations and check schedules via the official website, app, or customer service.
