A woman working at an infectious disease research institute in Irkutsk, Eastern Siberia, has reportedly died from a suspected case of pneumonic plague, according to Russian media reports. The hospital where she passed away has been placed under quarantine, and local authorities confirmed that all close contacts are currently under medical supervision.

Quarantine and Containment Measures

Regional officials initially reported the incident as a suspected case of an "especially dangerous infectious disease." However, the head of the neighboring Republic of Buryatia later stated that the victim died of the plague, citing data from Russia's public health watchdog. Local independent news outlets reported that some official statements regarding the incident were subsequently edited or removed.

"Approximately 200 individuals who came into contact with the 28-year-old victim have been placed under medical observation, though none currently show symptoms of the disease."

Source of Infection and Context

According to regional news reports, the researcher may have been infected after accidentally breaking a vial containing the bacteria while working in the laboratory. Russian health authorities, including federal public health chief Anna Popova, arrived in the region to oversee containment efforts.

Human plague cases are extremely rare in Russia, though natural reservoirs of the disease exist in neighboring Mongolia. While the infection is treatable with antibiotics, pneumonic plague can be fatal if left unaddressed, carrying historical significance linked to devastating pandemics such as the Black Death.
