Iraq has launched a comprehensive security review along its eastern border with Iran following the sudden closure of the Al-Shib border crossing in the Maysan province. This dramatic move comes amid deep and escalating disputes with Tehran, which is strongly demanding the extradition of Iranian-Kurdish dissidents residing in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

Border Closure and Security Concerns

The decision to close the Al-Shib crossing to travelers and commercial trucks took effect until further notice. Iraqi government spokesman Haider Al-Abbadi cited a lack of technical and logistical readiness. However, border officials acknowledge that current security arrangements are simply inadequate, with Baghdad primarily fearing weapons smuggling and the infiltration of militant elements.

Diplomatic Friction Over Extradition

Simultaneously, a severe political confrontation is unfolding. Following a security meeting in Baghdad, Iranian Ambassador to Iraq Mohammad Kazem Al-Sadeq announced that an understanding had been reached regarding the deportation or extradition of Iranian-Kurdish opposition activists.

Baghdad has refrained from confirming such an agreement, with officials indicating a strict refusal to hand over individuals who face imminent danger if returned to Iranian authorities.

Kurdistan Region Position

A political official in the Kurdistan Regional Government emphasized the necessity of separating the prevention of armed activity from the legal treatment of residents. As Baghdad and Erbil attempt to coordinate positions, Iraq's central challenge remains establishing its sovereignty against relentless Iranian pressure.
