The incident took place in the Ras al-Hadd area of the South Sharqiyah Governorate, which is recognized as one of the world's most vital nesting sites for green sea turtles. According to the Environment Authority in Oman, the athlete, Vadim Oliynik, and his partner were filmed violating wildlife protection laws and regulations. The authority did not specify the exact legal measures taken or the potential penalties Oliynik might face.
Public Outrage and Conservation Response
Oliynik, a prominent fitness coach with over 200,000 social media followers, triggered widespread outrage after footage of the stunt spread rapidly online. The Italian conservation organization Biologicamente was among the groups that strongly condemned the behavior and reported the incident to the authorities.
Experts emphasized that sea turtles are not photo props, and disturbing a nesting turtle can cause severe stress, potentially disrupting the egg-laying process and threatening fragile populations.
Apology and Investigation
"First of all, I want to apologize to the Environment Authority of the Sultanate of Oman, and also to the green sea turtle conservation organization, for sitting on the turtle," Oliynik wrote in an Instagram story. "Someone misled me and I didn't see the rules, so I made a mistake. I apologize to everyone. I didn't want to hurt the turtle or do it any harm."
Despite the public apology, the Environment Authority reiterated that ignorance of the law does not exempt individuals from prosecution. Ras al-Hadd remains a crucial sanctuary where nesting occurs nearly year-round, peaking between May and October, with thousands of turtles arriving annually to lay their eggs.
Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media and shared by advocacy groups suggested that Oliynik and his partner were detained at the airport while attempting to leave the country. While Omani authorities have not officially confirmed airport arrests, they have verified that formal legal proceedings have been initiated against him.
