Argentina Threatens UK With Legal Action Over Falklands Oil Exploration

Argentine President Javier Milei has threatened to initiate legal proceedings against the British government unless it halts oil exploration work off the coast of the Falkland Islands. In a social media post, Milei issued a two-week ultimatum to cancel the Sea Lion oil field project, a joint venture involving British and Israeli companies. The firms insist they hold valid licenses issued by the UK.
Escalating Tensions Over Sovereignty
The recent statements escalate tensions between the United Kingdom and Argentina over sovereignty of the archipelago, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, more than 40 years after a British military task force expelled Argentine forces that invaded the territory in 1982. Milei stated that if the demand is not met within two weeks, he has instructed the foreign ministry and legal teams to initiate international arbitration against Britain over what he termed the illegal looting of resources.
If the illegitimate exploitation of the area does not cease, Argentina will bring the matter before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg.
The Sea Lion Oil Field Project
The Sea Lion oil field, located approximately 209 kilometers from the Falkland Islands, is estimated to contain roughly 1.7 billion barrels of oil. Two companies, Britain's Rockhopper Exploration and Israel's Navitas Petroleum, are scheduled to begin oil production from the field within two years. Meanwhile, residents of the islands voted overwhelmingly in a 2013 referendum to remain a British overseas territory.
