IDF Warns of Rising West Bank Terror Plots Despite Low Threat Levels
Security sources warn that despite a low terror threat in the West Bank, Hamas is plotting attacks. The IDF is scaling up preventive measures amid rising friction and regional risks.
Security sources report that the terror threat level in the West Bank is at its lowest since 2011, thanks to joint operations by the Judea and Samaria Division under Brigadier General Kobi Heller, the Shin Bet, the police, and Border Police. However, Hamas headquarters in Turkey, Gaza, Iran, Qatar, Lebanon, and elsewhere are expected to try and promote terror plots against Israelis and IDF soldiers.
Preventive Operations and Operational Freedom
Ahead of the holidays, the Judea and Samaria Division has carried out extensive preventive operations not only against terror suspects, but also against incitement hotspots to minimize local terror potential.
"The IDF enjoys broad freedom of action in the West Bank, especially after capturing the Samaria refugee camps, establishing a foothold there, and building supporting infrastructure for rapid operations. Additionally, new outposts are being constructed to strengthen control," security sources stated.
Friction and Security Challenges
According to IDF data, five terrorists were eliminated by forces in various incidents over the past week. However, a new trend of friction is causing concern, driven in part by the significant growth in the number of new settlements (84 in addition to the existing 180), about 140 solitary farms, and over 100 illegal outposts.
This security reality requires the IDF to adopt an updated defensive concept regarding state-approved settlements and farms to prevent them from being at a disadvantage against hostile elements.
Strategic Threats and Coordination
Security officials emphasize that security coordination with the Palestinian Authority mechanisms is maintained, despite exceptional incidents requiring constant vigilance. Furthermore, large amounts of weaponry remain in the hands of the Palestinian Authority, alongside weapons smuggling across the Israel-Jordan border.
The political echelon has ordered increased readiness for the extreme "turning of the barrels" scenario, in which the Palestinian Authority enters succession struggles over Mahmoud Abbas's seat, turning weapons against IDF soldiers and Israeli citizens.
