IDF and Shin Bet Missed Critical Indicators Hours Before October 7 Attack
Declassified details reveal that the IDF and Shin Bet received multiple critical intelligence warnings hours before the October 7 attack, which were mistakenly dismissed as routine.

A series of critical intelligence indicators available to the IDF and Shin Bet hours before the October 7 surprise attack highlights the profound analytical failure of that night. Operational data flowed into intelligence command centers, but the system failed to connect the dots, dismissing disturbing findings as routine activity rather than preparations for a full-scale invasion.
Among the key intelligence items received from various collection assets in the Gaza Strip was explicit information regarding the descent of Hamas military wing commander Mohammed Deif into underground command tunnels. Concurrently, real-time visual intelligence detected unusual activity among operatives around embedded rocket launch sites, alongside targeted reports concerning preparations by anti-tank squads along the border.
These tactical signs coincided with the activation of hundreds of Israeli SIM cards inside the strip, which triggered alerts at Shin Bet headquarters. Despite the accumulation of incriminating data, the prevailing conception that Hamas was deterred prevented defense officials from issuing a timely operational warning.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera broadcasted an investigative documentary regarding the former Hamas military commander. In January 2025, Hamas confirmed that Deif had been killed in an Israeli Air Force strike months prior. Deif, born in Khan Yunis, survived multiple assassination attempts and orchestrated the October 7 massacre alongside Yahya Sinwar.
