IDF Strikes Hamas Targets in Gaza After Explosive Device Hits Military Vehicle
The IDF struck Hamas targets in northern Gaza after an explosive device hit an engineering vehicle. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have ordered a pilot plan for international security zones in the Strip.
Overnight on Monday, the IDF targeted Hamas infrastructure in the northern Gaza Strip. The strikes were launched in response to an explosive device detonated against an IDF "Panda" engineering vehicle operating near the "yellow line." While no casualties were reported, the military views the incident as a severe violation of the ongoing ceasefire.
Ceasefire Violation and IDF Response
Military officials are currently investigating when the explosive device was planted. The IDF Spokesperson's Unit released a statement addressing the escalation:
"This is a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement by the Hamas terrorist organization. IDF Southern Command forces remain deployed in the area in accordance with the agreement and will continue to act to remove any immediate threat."
Defense sources emphasized that the military views the provocation with utmost severity, warning that anyone attempting to exploit the ceasefire to rehabilitate terrorist capabilities is "gravely mistaken."
This incident follows recent operations in Gaza where the IDF eliminated five Hamas company commanders and four platoon commanders, and apprehended the head of the terror group's internal security apparatus. Security officials note that Hamas is feeling increasingly cornered, driving its attempts to carry out localized attacks.
Proposed Security Pilot Model
Following a recent tour of IDF positions along the "yellow line" by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he and Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed the military to draft a plan for a regional pilot model in Gaza, similar to the framework implemented in southern Lebanon.
Under the proposed outline—which is being coordinated with the United States—specific areas in Gaza outside the immediate presence of IDF troops would be designated for international forces. These forces would be tasked with clearing the areas of terror infrastructure, establishing local governance, and preventing the return of Hamas operatives. The IDF would maintain observation and fire control over these sectors without physically withdrawing from key strategic positions. However, officials acknowledge that implementing this model in Gaza is highly complex due to the current lack of an agreed-upon governing entity to manage civil affairs.
