US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Holds Secret Meetings in Israel on Iran
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the upcoming elections, discussing a potential renewal of military strikes against Iran amid internal US administration debates over strategy.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Israel on Monday and met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the details. The Pentagon did not announce the trip, which took place eight days before the Israeli elections and amid ongoing discussions between Washington and Jerusalem regarding a potential resumption of military action against Iran.
According to US officials, Netanyahu previously discussed the possibility of renewing strikes against Iran with US President Donald Trump, citing concerning new developments in Iran's nuclear program. While Trump reportedly told Netanyahu to proceed with preparations without making a definitive commitment, Hegseth and US Central Command (CENTCOM) are viewed as strong advocates within the administration for renewed military operations.
Despite the Pentagon leadership's stance, the majority of Trump's advisors currently favor maintaining and tightening economic sanctions and maximum pressure on Tehran. US officials indicate that the administration remains divided on whether military escalation or prolonged economic suffocation is the most effective approach to counter the Iranian threat.
