Lieutenant Colonel Ella, who commanded the 52nd Battalion of the 401st Armored Brigade, was moderately wounded in July 2024 during an engagement with terrorists in western Rafah. Just before his evacuation, he transmitted a radio message to his soldiers urging them to continue the fight and stating that he would return after recovering.
