Soldier Killed Near Hebron Remembered for Dedication and Combat Dream
Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roitman, killed in a Hebron shooting attack, dreamed of elite service and fought for a combat role. IDF and Shin Bet launched sweeping operations after the attack.

Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roitman, who was killed in a deadly shooting attack near Hebron, had dreamed of serving in the elite Shayetet naval commando unit and trained rigorously for the trials. After an injury derailed those plans, he fought hard to secure a combat role in the IDF. In a short documentary titled 'Deep Water', filmed during his final year at the Kadoorie Youth Village, Roitman documented his grueling preparation and shared his outlook on life: 'I want to aim the highest because if you have the option, at worst you'll reach the stars.'
His close friend Itay Yurman, 22, who directed the film, recalled their immediate bond as boarding school students from Ashkelon. 'We were closer than brothers, we swore to be together our whole lives,' Yurman said, cutting short a trip to Italy to return to Israel upon hearing the news. Roy and Yurman had planned a ski trip together for next month.
Kadoorie Youth Village Director Roi Bar Ilan paid tribute to Roitman's exceptional character and dedication. 'He was a young man full of motivation for a meaningful, values-driven combat service—one of our finest students who left a profound mark,' Bar Ilan said. Housemother Anat Abu Hatira remembered him as a pillar of Zionism, friendship, and patriotism who frequently returned to visit students in uniform to encourage them to strive for excellence.
Alongside Roitman, Sergeant Yuval Shay Soylem was also killed in the attack. In response, the IDF and Shin Bet launched a sweeping operation in the terrorists' hometown. Chief of the General Staff Eyal Zamir stated at the scene that while the casualties are deeply painful, initial debriefs indicate the soldiers' decisive action averted a far more severe attack against Israeli civilians.
