Prominent Haifa University Media Scholar Prof. Jonathan Cohen Passes Away
Prof. Jonathan (Yoni) Cohen, a prominent media researcher and faculty member at the University of Haifa, has passed away at the age of academic and personal dedication.
The academic community is mourning the loss of Prof. Jonathan (Yoni) Cohen, a faculty member in the Department of Communication at the University of Haifa and a prominent researcher in media effects and audience studies, who passed away over the weekend. His funeral was held on Sunday at the Tel Regev cemetery, following heartfelt tributes from the academic institutions and communities where he was active.
Cohen’s research focused on the relationship between audiences, media content, and how individuals identify with characters and narratives depicted in the media. Within the Department of Communication at the University of Haifa, he guided students and researchers and led a research laboratory examining media and its impacts on individuals and society.
Tributes from Academic and Community Circles
Colleagues in the Department of Communication paid tribute to him, writing that he was "a colleague, friend, and an inseparable part of the communication department family." They added that it is difficult to find words to describe the magnitude of the loss.
"Prof. Cohen generously nurtured young researchers eye-to-eye and with a warm smile," the Israeli Communication Association stated in its eulogy, highlighting his contributions to media psychology, narrative effects, and parasocial relationships.
A Legacy of Research and Personal Resilience
Cohen was also remembered by alumni of the Leo Baeck school, where he graduated in 1982. Following his studies, he was a member of the core group at moshav Alonei HaBashan in the Golan Heights before pursuing his academic career in Haifa, where he lived with his wife, Yael, and raised their three daughters.
In recent years, Cohen faced severe health challenges. In 2022, reports detailed his battle with a malignant tumor removed in 2020, followed by severe complications that required a rare intestinal transplant. Despite lengthy hospitalizations and treatments in the United States, he maintained his dedication to teaching.
