A Hadera resident was sentenced to seven months in prison and a 95,000-shekel fine for smuggling anacondas, pythons, and monitor lizards into the country inside his luggage.

A resident of Hadera was sentenced to seven months in prison and a fine of 95,000 shekels after being convicted of smuggling exotic wildlife, including an anaconda, pythons, and monitor lizards, into the country inside his luggage.
According to the indictment filed at the Petah Tikva Magistrates Court, the defendant flew to Germany in March 2023, where he purchased an anaconda, 13 pythons, five monitor lizards, and numerous other reptiles, amphibians, and tortoises. He packed the animals into his suitcases and flew back. A month later, he traveled to Hungary and repeated the operation, smuggling an additional 18 pythons, six monitor lizards, and other protected species.
He was convicted of trafficking and possessing protected wildlife species, some of which are endangered. As part of a plea bargain, Judge Ariel Salto sentenced him to prison time, the heavy financial penalty, and a 100,000-shekel suspended fine.
