A 22-year-old Singaporean national residing in the United States, Malone Lam, is set to plead guilty in a Washington federal court for his role in a massive $240 million cryptocurrency heist.
Lam and his co-conspirators are accused of stealing over 4,100 Bitcoins from a single veteran investor based in Washington, D.C., marking one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts from an individual in history. The group utilized sophisticated social engineering techniques, posing as technical support representatives from Google and a prominent cryptocurrency exchange to gain unauthorized access to the victim's accounts and drain them completely.
Following the successful theft, Lam embarked on an extravagant spending spree that ultimately drew the attention of federal law enforcement. He acquired a fleet of luxury vehicles, including Lamborghinis and Rolls-Royces, rented high-end mansions in Miami and Los Angeles, traveled exclusively via private jets, and frequented exclusive nightclubs. During one single night out, Lam reportedly spent over $569,000.
A federal investigation led by the FBI resulted in Lam's arrest and the seizure of a portion of his luxury assets. As part of the upcoming plea agreement in federal court, Lam faces a lengthy prison sentence and the formal forfeiture of the luxury properties and vehicles purchased with the stolen funds.
