Google to use AI to reduce flight damage… and conspiracy theories
Google is launching the Operation Blue Skies project in collaboration with the UK government. AI models will predict contrail formation zones, allowing airlines to adjust flight paths and reduce their climate footprint.

The aviation industry has been looking for ways to reduce its climate footprint for years, typically through more efficient engines, new aircraft structures, or advanced fuel blends. Now, Google is entering the picture with new AI models and an intriguing pilot project over the Atlantic Ocean, aiming to solve an environmental problem we all see in the sky but do not always understand—unlike the absurd conspiracy theories surrounding "chemtrails."
Not a conspiracy
Recently, Google unveiled a project called Operation Blue Skies, carried out in collaboration with the British government. The project aims to reduce the aviation industry's impact on the climate by avoiding the creation of contrails—vapor trails that form behind jet aircraft at high altitudes. These trails occur when water vapor emitted by engines condenses and freezes around soot and pollution particles in the cold upper atmosphere.
Despite concerns regarding the industry's carbon footprint from CO2 emissions, the contrail phenomenon is considered a "quiet" but harmful factor. These trails act like an atmospheric blanket; while they reflect some solar radiation, they primarily trap heat emitted from the Earth, contributing to warming. Estimates suggest these trails are responsible for nearly a third of the aviation industry's total climate impact.
To address this, Google has developed specialized AI models that predict at which altitudes warming contrails are likely to form. The models' predictions are verified using satellite imagery to ensure accuracy. These models are integrated into flight planning systems, enabling flight crews and air traffic control to adjust flight paths by passing above or below sensitive zones. In practice, this involves altitude changes of up to 2,000 feet (about 610 meters).
Google and the British government are conducting this 30-month pilot project in the airspace over the Atlantic Ocean, which accounts for 5% of global warming caused by contrails. Approximately 10,000 flights per year are expected to pass through the pilot area, with airlines updating routes based on AI recommendations while maintaining safety standards.
Efficiency check
One of the experiment's goals is to determine if bypassing these contrails is truly beneficial, as diverting flight paths can lead to increased fuel consumption and higher CO2 emissions. Therefore, the overall climate impact of route adjustments will be carefully examined.
If successful, the benefits will be twofold. It offers a significantly faster and more cost-effective way to mitigate global warming compared to other solutions. The experiment will cost the British government approximately 2.6 million pounds, with Google investing an additional 1.5 million pounds. Success could establish an operational framework that can be replicated globally, allowing authorities and airlines to manage airspace to reduce the climate footprint of flights without waiting for fleet-wide replacements.
