Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt is poised to become one of the biggest beneficiaries of Anthropic's upcoming public offering, thanks to an early-stage investment he made in the artificial intelligence startup, according to a Bloomberg report. Schmidt holds approximately 1% of the company, the developer behind the Claude AI models, following a multi-million-dollar investment during an early funding round. The potential return on this early bet highlights the astronomical valuation surge seen across the artificial intelligence sector in recent years.

Valuation Surge and Potential Returns

According to data compiled by research firm PitchBook, when Schmidt first invested in Anthropic in 2021, the startup was valued at $461 million. Current estimates suggest that the company's valuation at IPO could reach between $1.8 trillion and $2 trillion. This represents a staggering increase of more than 4,300 times its initial valuation. Bloomberg calculations based on the higher end of this valuation range indicate that Schmidt's stake could boost his personal wealth by a third, pushing it close to $80 billion. Even if Anthropic goes public at its previous valuation of $965 billion, Schmidt will still reap massive gains, expanding his current net worth of $57.5 billion by an additional $10 billion.

IPO Timeline and Portfolio Strategy

Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Anthropic is expected to kick off its official IPO roadshow as early as the week of November 9. Under this schedule, the company would begin trading on the Nasdaq before the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, which falls on November 26 this year. Anthropic's planned public offering is set to rival SpaceX's June listing, which stands as the largest IPO in history and valued Elon Musk's aerospace firm at $1.77 trillion. Schmidt's anticipated windfall stems from a strategic portfolio shift toward artificial intelligence. In addition to his foundational stake in Anthropic, he has recently invested in prominent AI startups including Mistral AI, Reflection AI, and World Labs.
