Google Pixel 11 Review: Incremental Upgrades and Software Focus
Google's Pixel 11 arrives with incremental hardware updates, a clean Android 17 interface, and advanced Gemini-powered features, highlighting that annual smartphone upgrades are rarely necessary.

When should you upgrade and replace your smartphone? This question has persisted for years, and there is no definitive answer. Some users feel compelled to change devices every year, while others manage just fine with a model that is a few years old. In recent years, the differences between models have narrowed, suggesting that a two-year upgrade cycle is quite sufficient. Google recently launched the Pixel 11, the new generation of its flagship device, which further emphasizes that rushing to upgrade is unnecessary—as with previous models, the primary innovations are software-based.
One significant change affects the device's availability: after years of arriving in the country via parallel imports, Electra Consumer Products—which operates chains like Mashbir and Shekem Electric—has begun officially importing Google's device lineup. We took the base model for a review.
Design and Build: Déjà Vu
Externally, the Pixel 11 remains completely identical to its predecessor. It has the exact same dimensions, though the weight has dropped slightly by 7 grams, bringing it to just under 200 grams. This follows the Pixel 10, which also changed very little from the model before it. The Pixel 11 feels like a solid, single block—a bit thick, and despite the slight weight reduction, it still feels somewhat heavy. The screen remains 6.3 inches, and the somewhat confusing button arrangement persists, with the power button located on the right side directly above the volume controls.
The camera bar stretching across the back of the device is still present, protruding only slightly from the smartphone's body. When placed on a table or another flat surface, the device remains stable thanks to this long bar. Since everything externally remains identical, the protection has not changed either: Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects both the front and back, and the smartphone complies with IP68 certification, meaning it is dust-resistant and theoretically capable of surviving immersion in water up to 1.5 meters deep for 30 minutes.
Hardware: Slightly More Powerful, Still Warm
In this department, we see the expected upgrade: the Pixel 11 is powered by Google's Tensor G6 processor, succeeding last year's Tensor G5, accompanied by 12 GB of RAM. Another welcome and necessary upgrade is the doubling of the minimum storage capacity from 128 GB in the previous model to 256 GB. This hardware specification delivers good performance—the device feels snappy, applications open quickly, and it handles everyday tasks with ease, and then some.
However, it tends to warm up a bit, both during relatively heavy gaming and while charging. This warmth becomes noticeable even after a relatively short gaming session, inheriting yet another trait from the previous generation. The screen displays excellent colors, reaches high peak brightness levels, and exhibits minimal reflections, ensuring easy outdoor visibility even under direct sunlight. Battery capacity has increased slightly to 4,985 mAh, easily lasting a day and a half to two days of work. The device supports 30W fast charging, though the box does not include a charger. Using a fast charger, replenishing the battery from 15% to 50% took 20 minutes, with a full charge achieved in about one hour and twenty minutes.
Software and Interface: Features for Content Creators
This is supposed to be the highlight of the Pixel 11. Google uses the Pixel to showcase what Android can achieve, introducing unique features that remain exclusive to its own devices—at least initially, before eventually reaching other manufacturers. Deleting unwanted details from a photo? Google launched that feature back in 2021 exclusively for the Pixel 6. Today, it is a given on almost any device. So what is on the menu this time?
The Pixel 11 ships with a clean version of Android 17, completely devoid of manufacturer skins or bloatware. Naturally, it includes Google's suite of applications: Drive, Docs, Notebook, Files, and more. Navigation defaults to gesture controls rather than traditional home and back buttons. Google introduces new tools tailored for content creators: the camera app features a dedicated "Creator" tab providing a social media aspect-ratio preview to help plan shots in advance. There is also a built-in teleprompter within the camera interface, allowing users to read text while filming, alongside project-based saving to keep all related materials organized in one place.
Aside from the creator focus, there is a shooting mode called "Magic Shot." The concept is simple: keep the camera open in video mode, and Gemini automatically identifies optimal moments to capture as still photos, ensuring you never miss a shot because you failed to pull out your phone or hit the shutter button in time. Relinquishing control to automatic image selection felt a bit challenging, but the feature works, generating real-time stills from ongoing video recordings. I remain unconvinced whether the automatic selections are always successful—largely a matter of personal preference—and utilizing this mode inherently means capturing more video files that consume additional storage space.
There is also a tool returning from the previous model called "Shot Assist," where Gemini analyzes the image composition prior to capture, breaking it down into segments and suggesting focal points for a better photo. This still requires a bit of patience and waiting for Gemini's recommendations to appear rather than simply snapping a quick picture. Gemini operates in the background elsewhere, though several of its advanced capabilities remain restricted to English or specific regions. Google announced that Gemini would eventually perform tasks such as booking rides or ordering groceries, but these functions are not yet available locally.
Google also introduced a new tool called Rambler, designed to clean up audio recordings by removing filler words like "um" or "ah" and providing an accurate transcript. This tool was also unavailable in Hebrew, and when tested in English, the transcription was not always accurate, occasionally leaving the unnecessary pauses intact. Ultimately, these innovations—or at least some of them—will likely roll out to other Google and third-party devices eventually, making it difficult to rely on them as decisive selling points for a new hardware purchase.
Cameras: Excellent in Low Light
Even without specialized shooting modes or significant hardware upgrades over the previous model, the cameras deliver very good photos, particularly at night or in low-light environments. The Pixel 11 is equipped with a triple-camera system: a primary 48-megapixel sensor, a 10.8-megapixel telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, and a 13-megapixel ultrawide sensor. Additionally, there is a 10.5-megapixel selfie camera.
The cameras produce very good images in daylight and favorable lighting conditions, aided by the relatively substantial optical zoom. Digital zoom remains reliable up to 10x magnification. Beyond that, the zoom functions and can assist, but image quality begins to degrade. Night photos appeared significantly brighter than the actual ambient lighting while maintaining sharp details.
Conclusion
Overall, it feels as though Google could have sufficed with a software update instead of launching the Pixel 11. The external casing remains unchanged, and the primary innovations stem from new Android features and Gemini integration—capabilities that can largely be obtained on existing hardware. Priced at approximately 3,200 NIS (with a more expensive Pro model available), buyers could easily purchase a base Galaxy S26 with double the storage capacity for a similar price. The new Pixel reinforces the realization that annual upgrades are largely unnecessary: while users with older Android devices will notice a significant leap, those holding a phone that is one or two years old can easily skip this generation and wait for the next upgrade cycle.
