Google mapped 166,000 neurons of a fruit fly brain into an AI-powered 3D connectome, but developers quickly used the open-source data to run Doom, trade Bitcoin, and play Minecraft.

Google has achieved a major scientific milestone by mapping the central nervous system of a male fruit fly, reconstructing over 166,000 neurons into a detailed 3D connectome. However, the internet quickly turned this serious neurological breakthrough into a playground for viral experiments, culminating in someone running the classic game Doom on it.

Mapping the Fruit Fly Connectome

The breakthrough was announced earlier this month as part of a collaboration between Google and the HHMI Janelia Research Campus, alongside other partners. Researchers sliced the fly's brain and body into ultra-thin sections, imaged each slice individually, and used artificial intelligence to stitch the two-dimensional images into a comprehensive 3D model. Without AI, manually reconstructing such a massive web of connections would have been practically impossible.

The resulting open-source digital connectome, designated MaleCNS v1.0 and published on GitHub, was designed to advance research in neurology, pharmacology, and biotechnology. By comparing male and female fruit fly connectomes, scientists hope to better understand behavioral differences between the sexes and eventually pave the way for mapping more complex brains.

From Neuroscience to Doom and Bitcoin

Despite the noble scientific intentions, the tech community immediately seized on the open-source release for unorthodox projects. A student named Owen Sinclair Smith utilized GPT-6 Astra to integrate the digital fly brain into Minecraft. Other users on X pushed the boundaries even further:

  • A user deployed the connectome to trade Bitcoin with a 100-dollar budget.

  • Another user taught the digital brain to solve a Rubik's cube.

  • Others programmed it to write LinkedIn posts, park a car in reverse, and finally, run the legendary game Doom.
