Google Home MCP Update Allows External AI Agents to Manage Smart Homes
Google introduces Google Home MCP, a new server allowing external AI agents like Claude Cowork and NanoClaw to securely manage smart home devices, analyze camera feeds, and optimize energy usage.

Google has announced a major update to its smart home platform, introducing support for external AI agents through the newly launched Google Home Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Following the integration of its proprietary Gemini AI model into Google Home, the company is now allowing users to connect third-party AI agents—such as OpenClaw, NanoClaw, and Claude Cowork—to control and interact with their smart home ecosystems.
Enabling External AI Agents
According to Taylor Lehman, product manager for Google Home and Nest, the new MCP server enables any MCP-compatible agent to securely work with household connected devices and access event histories, such as timers and automation scenes. This integration allows users to leverage AI agents for complex household tasks, including analyzing camera feeds to track down a missing pet or monitoring energy consumption down to the minute to optimize electricity usage.
Furthermore, smart speakers powered by Google Home can act as the audio interface for these external agents, providing a voice-activated alternative to messaging apps like Telegram or WhatsApp. Developers can also utilize the architecture to build custom dashboards tailored to specific smart home management preferences.
Requirements and Security Caveats
To connect an external agent to Google Home, users must set up a project within Google Cloud, configure the Google Home MCP server, and pass the configuration data to their respective AI agent. However, Google noted that the feature currently involves specific prerequisites and limitations:

While the prospect of autonomous smart home management offers unprecedented convenience, industry experts advise caution. AI agents have occasionally exhibited errors in automated tasks, raising potential security and reliability concerns regarding the remote control of door locks, air conditioning systems, and lighting networks.
