Anthropic Introduces Three Metrics to Monitor AI Development Pace

Following CEO Dario Amodei's recent call to slow down the AI development race, Anthropic has introduced three specific metrics to monitor the pace of artificial intelligence progress. This move comes just days after Amodei shook the industry by urging a coordinated slowdown among major technology companies.
In a blog post published on Thursday, Anthropic announced it evaluated the degree of AI involvement in self-development, the oversight mechanisms for autonomous agents, and the allocation of corporate computing resources. The company shared its measurement methodologies to encourage other firms to follow suit, fulfilling a three-step deceleration plan outlined by Amodei last Saturday, which had previously lacked operational details.
"While the world considers slowing the pace of progress on the technological front, we must do everything in our power to narrow the gap between what is known to leading labs and what is known to the public," Anthropic wrote. "This means better measurement of AI development, public reporting, and giving society the opportunity to decide how to use this information."
Industry Response and Key Metrics
Amodei's weekend appeal for deceleration received backing from industry leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, following severe warnings from researchers regarding the growing potential for AI-driven harm. Amodei noted that his plan aims to temper the rate of model capability improvements without sacrificing commercial advantages or the technological leadership of the United States.
As part of its first metric, Anthropic stated that Claude models are not yet operating completely autonomously in any of the evaluated research and development tasks.
The second metric involved building a system to monitor and intervene in actions performed by autonomous AI agents. The company determined that roughly 30,000 agents simultaneously performed research and engineering work on its primary internal platform at any given moment.
Resource Allocation for Safety
For its third metric, Anthropic measured a snapshot of how all its computing resources were utilized between July 13 and 20. The company reported that approximately 6% of the compute power directed toward general AI research and development was allocated specifically to safety. Furthermore, about 12% of the computing resources dedicated to AI-guided research and development were channeled into safety measures.
Company representatives explained that these metrics illustrate how models are actually developed, as opposed to existing capability benchmarks that focus solely on final outcomes. Combining both approaches will provide external stakeholders with a reliable baseline for assessing the true pace of AI evolution.
"We hope to set an example of this transparency by publishing our measurements, and we will continue to do so," Anthropic concluded.
