Apple Brings Long-Awaited Equalizer Support to AirPods in Latest Update
Apple has rolled out a new firmware update for AirPods, introducing a long-awaited equalizer feature along with enhanced tracking and GymKit integration.

Apple has officially released iOS 27 alongside major software updates across its entire ecosystem, but a particularly notable update has arrived for its wildly popular AirPods lineup. Users have long requested greater control over their audio experience, and Apple is finally delivering with the introduction of a built-in equalizer.
The new firmware update, numbered 9A348 and above, brings much-anticipated features to the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Max 2, and AirPods 4. Alongside integration with Siri AI and improved Find My tracking capabilities via Apple Watch, the most significant addition is undoubtedly the custom audio controls.
Finally, Built-in Equalizer Support
Until now, users had to rely entirely on Apple's out-of-the-box sound profile. While widely praised for their default acoustic tuning, the lack of manual sound adjustments was a frequent critique from audiophiles. The new update changes this by adding a dedicated Equalizer setting within the audio routing menu.
Users can navigate to their AirPods settings while the charging case is open or the earbuds are in use, select Audio & Routing, and locate the Equalizer option. From there, users can choose between a Recommended profile or a Custom setting that allows manual adjustment of Low, Mid, and High frequencies.
"While it is not a full multi-band graphic equalizer with custom profile saving like some competitors, it represents a major positive shift in Apple's hardware flexibility."
How to Update Your AirPods Firmware
Updating AirPods firmware remains notoriously hands-off. To check your current version, connect your AirPods to an Apple device, open the settings menu, and verify the version number at the bottom of the page.
If an update is required, users must place the earbuds inside their charging case, close the lid, connect the case to a power cable, and keep it connected near an active Apple device for at least 30 minutes. Alternatively, normal day-to-day usage will eventually trigger an automatic background update.
