Attorney Roni Paloch has stepped in to mediate the crisis, working to draft a new employment agreement that will clearly redefine the division of powers between Goldknopf and Babchik. While Goldknopf secured the backing of the Gur Rebe to continue his political path, he insists on curtailing Babchik's expansive influence, stating that Babchik will operate strictly as a senior assistant rather than managing the sect's broader political apparatus.
The Struggle for Influence
"He will work under me as a senior assistant, but not as the manager of the political apparatus in Gur as he operated in recent years," Goldknopf clarified regarding Babchik's changing role.
Babchik, who previously served as the right-hand man to former minister Yaakov Litzman, has long been a central figure in ultra-Orthodox politics. While critics within Goldknopf's circle accused Babchik of acting with excessive independence and attempting to position himself as a successor, Babchik dismissed these reports as complete nonsense and claimed that internal rivals orchestrated a failed push against him.
Despite ongoing efforts to formalize a new operational framework, insiders caution that Babchik remains a trusted confidant of the Rebe and a formidable political force. The success of the newly negotiated agreement will determine whether Goldknopf can successfully reclaim authority over his office or if the fragile compromise will ultimately collapse.
