Tel Aviv's Gastro-Mechanico Restaurant Closing as Chef Moves to Rishon LeZion
The acclaimed Tel Aviv restaurant Gastro-Mechanico is closing its doors as Chef Pini Melotnik leaves to lead a massive new culinary project in Rishon LeZion, replacing Tomer Agai.
The Tel Aviv restaurant scene is taking another hit as the acclaimed restaurant "Gastro-Mechanico" on Tshelnov Street in the south of the city, considered one of the past year's most talked-up culinary promises, is set to close its doors soon.
The intimate restaurant by Chef Pinchas (Pini) Melotnik earned widespread praise from food critics and foodies alike for a unique menu blending advanced cooking techniques with local ingredients, yet it was decided to lock the doors precisely at the height of its blossoming.
The reason for the surprising step is unrelated to financial difficulties, but rather stems from an exceptional professional opportunity. According to a report published on Tuesday by N12, Melotnik received an offer impossible to refuse to lead a massive, ambitious culinary project with a massive financial investment currently being established in Rishon LeZion. The chef's surprising move outside Tel Aviv comes following quite a bit of drama behind the scenes of the new project.
Originally, the person designated to head the venture in Rishon LeZion was well-known chef Tomer Agai, former co-owner of the legendary "Santa Catarina" restaurant which closed in 2024 following heavy debts and the damages of the Iron Swords war.
After the entrepreneurs decided to forego the engagement with Agai and not continue with him, Melotnik was singled out as the perfect solution. The generous offer and the scale of the venture tipped the scales, leading Melotnik to take the reins and part ways with the culinary gem he established in south Tel Aviv. It remains to be seen whether he will succeed in replicating the unique magic in the new venture in the Shfela as well.
