Flydubai Co-Pilot in Israel Flight Incident Banned Over Extremism
A Flydubai co-pilot who nearly crashed a flight to Israel was previously banned by Oman over extremist views, according to reports. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu termed the incident an act of terror.
The co-pilot of a Flydubai flight who allegedly stabbed the captain and nearly caused Flight 1073 from Dubai to Israel to crash had previously been banned from flying by Oman over concerns regarding extremist ideologies, sources familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal.
Security Lapses and Investigation
Despite the ban, the Omani pilot was hired by Flydubai, allowing him to pilot aircraft on the sensitive route connecting the United Arab Emirates and Israel. UAE authorities are still investigating the incident. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a senior adviser to the UAE ruler termed the near-disaster a terrorist act.
The attacker underwent a process of Islamic radicalization, said Netanyahu. He arrived with the intent to cause the aircraft and its passengers to crash.
Aviation Security Concerns
Aviation security experts noted that the event highlights a significant security failure. Although background checks are standard, authorities missed warning signs. Israeli officials stated that the country had long urged Dubai airport officials to tighten security on flights heading to Tel Aviv. Meanwhile, Israeli airlines have suspended flights between Dubai and Israel amid security concerns and risks stemming from the war against Iran.
