In Iraq, there are fears: will the militias join the confrontation between the US and Iran?

Members of the Iraqi parliament warned today, Wednesday, in conversations with the Qatari newspaper "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" about the possible intervention of the Shiite militias in the country in the confrontation between the US and Iran. In Iraq, the fear is growing that the current confrontation will expand and the country's territory will become one of the potential battlegrounds.

All this is happening while the Iraqi government declares its intention to establish the principle of monopoly on weapons and the use of force. September 30 was set as the deadline for progress on this path. However, if the militias renew attacks against American interests, the Iraqi government will soon face a difficult test regarding its ability to enforce its decisions and isolate the country from the regional confrontation.

Yasser Watwat, a member of the Security Committee in the Iraqi parliament, said that government and political figures are conducting intensive contacts and dialogues with various parties to prevent the involvement of Iraqi factions in any regional confrontation. According to him, the Iraqi interest is to maintain the neutrality of the country regarding regional conflicts and to prevent a recurrence of events that turned Iraq into an arena for an exchange of blows.

"Iraq cannot bear entering a new military confrontation, especially in light of the regional circumstances. Any escalation between Washington and Tehran must not turn into a conflict within Iraqi territory or drag Iraqi parties into it," he emphasized.

The member of parliament added that there is a real fear that an escalation in the confrontation will lead to attacks by the militias against US interests and bases in Iraq, and to an American response in the form of strikes on senior officials and commanders in the Shiite militias.

At the same time, Iraqi politician Mahdi Abd al-Karim clarified:

"We must be wary of the danger of Iraqi factions joining a military confrontation between the US and Iran. Any such decision will have severe consequences for the security and sovereignty of Iraq. It could expose the country to a new wave of attacks. Iraq is facing a very dangerous security situation. Any new escalation will have direct consequences for the internal situation."
