Jewish Man Assaulted in Antisemitic Attack Along Düsseldorf Promenade
A 35-year-old Jewish man wearing an IDF symbol was assaulted in Düsseldorf, Germany, sparking outrage, police appeals, and solidarity rallies.
A 35-year-old Jewish man was physically assaulted in a suspected antisemitic attack in Düsseldorf, Germany, after walking along the Rhine promenade wearing a kippah and a sweater bearing an IDF symbol. The victim sustained minor injuries, and local police have issued a public appeal for assistance in locating the unidentified attackers.
According to Düsseldorf police, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening at approximately 8:30 PM. The victim, a German man born in Israel, was walking with his companion along the Rhine river promenade when two women approached them, hurling anti-Israel insults and slurs. Shortly thereafter, two men joined the women and began physically assaulting the Jewish man with punches and kicks. According to the German-Jewish newspaper Jüdische Allgemeine, the assailants repeatedly shouted "child murderer" at the victim.
Intervention by Bystanders
Three passersby intervened to assist the victim. One of the bystanders sustained minor injuries after being attacked by the two male suspects. According to initial witness testimonies, the male attackers were estimated to be around 20 years old and were described as having a North African appearance. One had shoulder-length dark curly hair and wore a bright red tracksuit, while the other had short dark hair and wore dark overalls.
Police described one of the female suspects as being between 20 and 25 years old, also of North African appearance, with a robust build, long dark brown hair, full lips, and heavy makeup. The local Jewish community strongly condemned the antisemitic attack and called for decisive action against the perpetrators.
Condemnations and Solidarity
"This represents a new dimension of antisemitism in Düsseldorf. It is intolerable that someone should be attacked on the street simply for being openly Jewish," stated Düsseldorf Mayor Stephan Keller.
Mayor Keller pledged solidarity with the Jewish community and emphasized that the majority of citizens stand firmly alongside their Jewish neighbors. The Jewish community described the incident as alarming and shocking, expressing gratitude to the bystanders who prevented more severe harm. A solidarity gathering was subsequently held at the promenade, drawing approximately 100 participants, including local politicians from the Green Party and the Social Democratic Party, some of whom wore kippahs to demonstrate support.
