China Announces Arrival of New Pandas to Atlanta Zoo During Xi-Trump Talks
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced during talks with US President Donald Trump that two pandas will soon arrive at the Atlanta Zoo, highlighting Beijing's classic panda diplomacy.
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on Thursday that two giant pandas from China will arrive at the Atlanta Zoo in the coming days, describing them as "ambassadors of friendship." The announcement, made at the White House during opening remarks prior to his talks with US President Donald Trump, marks a new chapter in a unique aspect of Chinese foreign policy known as "panda diplomacy."
"In a few days, two pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will arrive at their new home at the Atlanta Zoo and meet the American people," Xi said. He called it "good news" and praised the panda leasing program as an example of "friendship between the Chinese and American peoples."
Panda Diplomacy and US-China Relations
The zoo and China announced the transfer of the male Ping Ping and the female Fu Shuang—both born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Breeding—back in April, but according to the Associated Press, Xi's remarks are the first public confirmation of a general timeframe for their arrival. A zoo spokesperson stated that the exact date will not be disclosed at this time and that facilities are being upgraded under the guidance of experts from China.
Pandas, which have become one of China's cultural symbols, have long been considered one of Beijing's favorite "soft power" tools. They live in the wild only within China, and nearly all pandas worldwide, even those born abroad, are considered Chinese property. China routinely leases them for fixed periods as a gesture of goodwill, and also uses them as leverage when relations cool.

This was also the case with the United States. Pandas from the National Zoo in Washington were returned to China in 2023 upon the expiration of their agreement amid disputes between the two superpowers, only to be replaced a year later by another pair under a new leasing agreement. In 2024, the Atlanta Zoo also bid farewell to its pandas, concluding a 25-year partnership.
Historical Context of Panda Diplomacy
Ever since the thaw in relations between communist China and the US, marked by Nixon's historic visit to Beijing in 1972, pandas have been a staple of diplomatic gestures between the two nations. During a dinner on that visit, Pat Nixon sat next to Premier Zhou Enlai and noticed a cigarette box decorated with pandas on the table. "They're cute, aren't they? I love them," she told him. "I'll give you some," he replied.
About two months later, a pair of pandas was transferred to the National Zoo in Washington, remaining among the most popular attractions there until their deaths in the 1990s.
