Disaster in New York: Beloved teacher killed when her car rolled into a pool
Allison Rachmani (40), a mother of four and a well-known teacher from the Five Towns Jewish community, died after her car sank into a swimming pool in a backyard. Investigators estimate that she suffered a sudden medical event that caused her to lose control of the steering wheel. At her funeral, her husband tearfully eulogized her and called her an "Eshet Chayil" (Woman of Valor): "I cannot imagine more appropriate words for the woman you were."
A severe tragedy struck this past weekend in the Jewish community of Five Towns on Long Island in the New York area. Allison Rachmani, a mother of four and a beloved 40-year-old teacher, passed away after the SUV she was driving rolled into a swimming pool in the backyard of a private home in Hewlett Bay Park in Nassau County.
According to the official statement from the Nassau County Police, the fatal accident occurred on Friday at 9:29 AM. Rachmani was driving a 2023 GMC vehicle on the driveway of a home on Elinor Street when she suddenly lost control. The vehicle veered off its path, hit a tree, collided with a parked, empty Honda car, and finally sank into the pool in the yard.
She was extracted from the vehicle before police forces arrived at the scene. Emergency responders who were called to the location performed advanced resuscitation efforts, and she was evacuated to a local hospital, where doctors were forced to pronounce her dead. Despite the difficult circumstances of the accident, a source close to the family clarified that Rachmani did not drown and even managed to call for help on her own after the impact, but her condition deteriorated and she died during the evacuation.
In a report by the "New York Post," it was noted, citing a source familiar with the investigation details, that the central assessment is that Rachmani suffered a sudden medical event, which caused her to lose control of the steering wheel. The police have not yet officially released the cause of death, and the investigation is still ongoing, but at this stage, it has been clarified that there is no suspicion of criminal activity.
An interrupted vacation and painful eulogies
Rachmani's tragic death has shocked the community, especially given the fact that she celebrated her fortieth birthday just six days before the disaster. On that very day, she and her husband Matthew were supposed to leave for a couple's vacation in Paris. Rachmani was a well-known educational figure in the community who served as a math coordinator at the elementary school of the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway. Her husband serves as the president of the Orthodox synagogue "Irving Place Minyan" in Woodmere.
At her heartbreaking funeral held on Sunday at the Boulevard-Riverside cemetery in Hewlett, her husband Matthew began his eulogy by reciting the "Eshet Chayil" (Woman of Valor) poem:
"I cannot imagine more appropriate words for the woman you were."
He sobbed and admitted that he regretted not saying these words at their wedding. In another report by People magazine, it was described how he told that she supported him from the beginning of their shared journey and nurtured their children like delicate plants.
Her sister, Dana Hess, eulogized her and described her as the life of the party and an educator who taught out of a true love for the profession, someone who saw potential everywhere others saw a difficult child. On social media, many farewell messages accumulated from her acquaintances, who described her as a woman full of appreciation and kindness. "She was a light from the moment she entered until the moment she left," was written in one of the online eulogies.
