IDF Draft Evader Apprehended Aboard Flight at Ben Gurion Airport
An ultra-Orthodox draft evader was arrested aboard a Wizz Air flight at Ben Gurion Airport after bypassing border control. The incident delayed the Bratislava-bound flight by an hour.
An ultra-Orthodox draft evader was apprehended yesterday aboard a Wizz Air flight at Ben Gurion Airport's Terminal 1, just moments before the plane was scheduled to depart for Bratislava, Slovakia.
The incident began when flight crew members broadcasted the suspect's name over the aircraft's PA system, requesting him to come forward. After several minutes of silence, security personnel boarded the plane and began inspecting passengers. They located the young man, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and pretending to sleep. Security officers woke him up and escorted him off the aircraft.
The flight was delayed by approximately one hour while additional security sweeps were conducted following the breach.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the young man, who is legally barred from leaving Israel due to his military draft evasion status, possessed a valid passport and a boarding pass. He reportedly bypassed border control by tailgating closely behind another passenger through the automated gates. While subsequent security layers eventually detected the discrepancy, the fact that he successfully boarded the aircraft represents a significant security failure.
This incident is part of a growing trend. In recent days, authorities at Ben Gurion Airport have intercepted several ultra-Orthodox draft evaders daily who are determined to travel to Uman, Ukraine, while actively avoiding IDF conscription.
