Following his massive breakout season, Israeli forward Deni Avdija is facing a fresh challenge with the Portland Trail Blazers. While his status has never been higher, the team's revamped roster now features two exceptionally dominant guards in Damian Lillard and Ja Morant, sparking questions about how this will impact Avdija's on-court role.
In an NBA.com season preview, Steve Ashburner labeled Avdija as Portland's MVP from last year, but offered a clear warning for the upcoming campaign.
"Avdija likely won't get the same volume of touches and opportunities this season," the report noted. "His usage rate spiked to 28.5 last year after sitting at 16.8 across his four seasons in Washington, but both Lillard and Morant demand the ball to be effective."
Balancing the Backcourt and Coaching Challenges
The league's official website highlighted integrating Avdija into a crowded backcourt as one of the primary tasks for new head coach Micah Nori. According to Ashburner, if Nori can maximize Lillard, revive Morant, help Avdija adapt to the guard-heavy rotation, and guide Portland back to the playoffs, it would constitute a massive success.
Conversely, Rip City Project's Jack Simon offered a slightly different perspective, arguing that Avdija must remain a focal point in clutch moments despite Lillard's return.
"Deni Avdija is going to be one of Portland's best players for years to come," Simon wrote. "He needs to be the guy with the ball in his hands for the Blazers down the stretch."
Easing the Pressure on Avdija
At the same time, Simon explained how Lillard's return could actually benefit the Israeli star by alleviating heavy burdens during crucial stretches.
"Every team needs multiple players capable of filling that role, and in the short term, Lillard is certainly someone Portland can trust in the playoffs," Simon noted, adding that having one of the era's premier clutch performers on the floor will significantly reduce the pressure on Avdija.
